What is PrEP?

PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is a way to prevent HIV infection by taking anti-HIV medication continuously in advance. It is recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization) and the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and it is already widely used in Europe and the United States.

The US CDC has reported that, when taken properly, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%.

What to know
before you start

With PrEP, there are several things to check before and after you start, as well as some precautions when taking it.

Main side effects (tend to be temporary)

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Insomnia, fatigue

Who should take extra care

  • People who already have HIV
  • People with serious kidney or liver disease
  • People taking other medications (especially for hepatitis C, epilepsy, etc.)
  • PrEP is for prevention only and cannot be used to treat HIV. It does not prevent sexually transmitted infections other than HIV, so please also use condoms and get tested regularly

While taking PrEP, we ask that you have HIV and kidney function tests every 3 months. You can do these at home with the test kit included in your prescription set.
